Luxury ship 'arrested' for death
This is the first time that a passenger vessel has been ordered by a court to be detained.

A mysterious death and an arrest – sounds a logical chain of events, doesn’t it? Now for the facts: a ship has been ‘arrested and detained’ for the death of a 14-month-old US citizen of Indian origin.

The Lakshadweep court, on directions from the Kerala court, ‘arrested’ a Starcruises cruise liner M V Super Star Libra for an hour in connection with the death of the baby girl Neuna Shah on November 21 last year.

The decision was taken after the Justice C N Ramachandran Nair sought action on a petition Neuna’s parents - Mehul Shah and Natasha Banerji - seeking action against the vessel for the negligence.

Neuna died by drowning when the small boat into which she along and her parents alighted near Kadmath island in Lakshadweep overturned in heavy rains and rough sea.

This is the first time that a passenger vessel has been ordered by a court to be detained.

However, the ship was released after the master of the vessel reportedly furnished a bank guarantee of Rs 10 lakh.

The vessel, which arrived from Mumbai and was arrested, was later released has already left on its return journey.
