Lucknow: After CNN-IBN exposed how students at the Lucknow Universitywere roaming the campus with armed escorts, the Vice-Chancellor R P Singh ordered closure of the university and students were asked to vacate hostels.
The university has of late been rocked by protests organised by student leaders and the Vice-Chancellor's order could not have been more timely.
"Students living illegally have to leave immediately or will be forcibly thrown out," R P Singh said.
The university is shut indefinitely, but Friday's announcement asking students to vacate hostels stumped many preparing for crucial entrance exams.
Says BSc final student, Shailendra Kumar, "I have an exam tomorrow. Since they announced that all hostels should be vacated, I haven't been able to concentrate on my studies."
Many students who come from small towns and remote villages are least interested in politics and even though the Vice-Chancellor has said those appearing for competitive exams can stay on in the hostel till their exams are over, students are still an apprehensive lot.
"We are scared that if we go for the exams, we might come back to find that our luggage has been thrown out," says a student.
The University has decided that the campus will be opened in a phased manner, but it hasn't set a date for its reopening yet.
