CHENNAI: Loyola College celebrated 10 years of their Outreach Programme along with representatives from the slums they have helped over the years on Monday. Nearly 1,200 undergraduate and post graduate students who were part of the programme gathered along with the 200 people they have helped as part of their work to help the underprivileged.The Department of Outreach was started in 2001 and the syllabus developed by this department became part of the curriculum with the aim of introducing change in the pattern of thinking of every student. The students work in Zones 5, 7 and 9 of the city. “Outreach, through its Lab to Land approach, has enabled the students to transform themselves through field exposure, experiment, experience and involvement in the slums of Chennai. People-oriented NGOs, government officials, Corporation schools and social activists encouraged the students’ work in the community and extended a helping hand in the development of poor people,” said Rev Dr G Joseph Antony Samy, Vice Principal and Director of Outreach, in a press release. The Department of Outreach has been working with slum children, women, youth and aged people and particularly, it focuses on widows and their children’s development as they are a more vulnerable section of the slum dwellers. During the celebration, the best volunteers, best teams and best departments were appreciated and awarded with certificates.Sivagami, Head – Inclusive Education, South Asia and Regional Manager, Aide et Action International Chennai and Dr Thamizhachi Thangapandian felicitated the students for their selfless service to the marginalised people. Others present included Rev Fr K Amal SJ, Rector; Rev Dr Joe Arun SJ, secretary and correspondent and Rev Dr S Arockiasamy SJ, the Deputy Principal.
