Government employees owing allegiance to Left service organisations and the BJP as well as teachers will go on a token strike on Tuesday, in protest against the determined move of the Oommen Chandy-led UDF government to introduce Contributory Pension Scheme (CPF) for new recruits in the State Government service from the next fiscal.
Sections of KSRTC crew will also strike work.
However, since the UDF-aligned unions are not joining the strike and private buses on non-nationalised routes will ply as usual, the hardships of commuters is likely to be reduced.
Home Minister Tiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan said that protection will be ensured for all those attending work on Tuesday.
Congress and UDF-aligned employees unions have backed out of the strike on the basis of assurances given by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, though they too were unhappy with the decision on CPF scheme at the onset.
“A total of 32 service organisations under UTEF, the common platform, will not join the stir,’’ said chairman Kottathala Mohanan in a statement.
Kerala Land Revenue Staff Association has also announced that members will attend duty.
M Shajahan, chairman of the pro-Left Action Council of State Government Employees and Teachers, asserted that the strike will paralyse the normal functioning of offices and the government.
“The strike is not for securing any benefits.
When pension funds worldwide are facing a crisis and crumbling, the stance of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy on the CPF scheme is mysterious.
It cannot be approved as it is part of an agenda to privatise pension disbursal”, he said in a statement, co-signed by C R Jose Prakash, general convenor, Teachers Service Organisations Agitation Council and P Sunil Kumar, general secretary, FETO.
