Follow us:WhatsappFacebookTwitterTelegram.cls-1{fill:#4d4d4d;}.cls-2{fill:#fff;}Google News‘Science Education and Research’ will be the focal theme of the 25th session of the Kerala Science Congress (KSC), to be organised at Technopark here from January 29 to February 1, next year. A National Science Exhibition would also be organised simultaneously at Kanakakunnu Palace, here from January 28 to February 5. “We have chosen ‘Science Education and Research’ as the special theme of the Science Congress in view of its criticality in fulfilling India’s aspirations as a knowledge-based economy,” said KSCSTE executive vice- president V N Rajasekharan Pillai.  The KSCSTE is organising the conference in association with its R&D Centres and Technopark.  There would also be six memorial lectures in honour of Science and Technology visionaries like P K Iyengar, G N Ramachandran, E K Janakiyammal, P T Bhaskara Panicker, P K Gopalakrishnan and P R Pisharoty.  A E Muthunayagam, chairman, 25th Kerala Science Congress Committee, said the science congress would provide a platform to deliberate on the new perspectives and promote innovation in the field of science education.  “A general perception about the declining interest in science among students is that they are not motivated enough to study science. Crunch in science education, coupled with lessening scientific creativity countrywide, calls for a rethink on the system of science education,” he added.  “We all need to put in our thoughts on science education as well as research together honestly and sincerely to evolve a new system of science education and research,” Muthunayagam observed.  The 25th Kerala Science Congress would have several sessions for intense interaction and knowledge sharing. General papers, contest papers and posters in the identified subject areas would be included in different sessions. Thrust would be on encouraging young researchers through Kerala State Young Scientist Awards, Best Paper Awards, Post Graduate Student Interaction Programme and Children’s Science Congress. The best paper presented in each of the broad subject areas would be awarded certificate of merit with prize money of Rs 10,000. The awardees would also be eligible for a contingency grant of Rs one lakh for two years for pursuing further research.  The Kerala State Young Scientist Award instituted by the KSCSTE is intended to honour talented young Kerala scientists in recognition of their outstanding contributions in any branch of science and technology.  R Prakashkumar is the convener of the 25th Kerala Science Congress.
