New Delhi: Forty-eight-year old Chanchal Modok, a Kolkata-based industrialist, who was who was kidnapped on December 4, was freed on Thursday night at Sreekona village in Assam’s Cachar district.
Modak, the proprietor-cum-managing director of Gamaria Rubber garden in Karimganj district, by suspected ultras from his bungalow at the rubber garden, about 55 km from Silchar.
News agency PTI quoted Police in Karimganj saying an anonymous phone call Thursday evening from Sreekona told them a “mad” man was roaming in the area near National Highway 53.
The police team, led by Karimganj Additional SP Mahesh Chand Sharma, rushed to the place and found the industrialist late on Thursday night.
Police said Modok, later identified by his family members at Gamaria, was traumatised.
They added that soon after his rescue, Modak, who hails from Salt Lake locality in Kolkata, was admitted into Hailakandi Civil hospital for medical test.
He was them sent to his residence at Gamaria in Karimganj district late at night.
PTIquoted a senior police official as saying the kidnappers left Modak at Sreekona after the local people “challenged them about their captive”.
Assam, Mizoram and Tripura police had launched joint operation along the border areas of the three states, which are dotted by thick forest and hilly terrains, after Modok was kidnapped from his at gunpoint three weeks ago.
The police have arrested Modak's driver, a rubber garden employee and a Silchar-based trader in connection with the industrialists kidnapping.
