Kolkata may get non-linear ropeway system 'Curvo'
The estimated power consumption for running a 'Curvo' system for one hour would be approximately around 12 MW only

Kolkata: The city-based Conveyor and Ropeway Services Private Limited is contemplating to introduce a non-linear ropeway in Kolkata as a second alternative urban transportation mode christened 'Curvo'.

Disclosing the company's ambitious project connecting a three km stretch between Sealdah and BBD Bagh with a non-linear ropeway, its managing director Shekhar Chakravarty told reporters they have already discussed the project with the state government, which has welcomed the move.

The company, which has already submitted a proposal for this Rs 50 crore project to the West Bengal Urban Development minister Firhad Hakim, was preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for approval, Chakravarty said.

"The minister has taken keen interest and advised us to submit a DPR. We told him that we want to make this city free from traffic congestion and reach people safely to their destination in a pollution free environment," he said.

The minister also suggested to consider a similar project between Salt Lake and BBD Bagh, Chakravarty said.

Director of the company Rachana Mukherjee said the three km stretch would have two stations in-between and would save energy cost, reduce the level of pollution and traffic congestion.

"Once the government's approval is received, we will ask the Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, for a design that will be compatible with our technology. The project will be commissioned within a year," she said.

"Both AC and non-AC cabins with a capacity of 8 to 10 seats will be spaced at 22 to 25 seconds interval. The Curvo, will on any designated route, provide boarding and deboarding facility at every 750 metres," Mukherjee said.

Stating that the estimated power consumption for running a 'Curvo' system for one hour would be approximately around 12 MW only, she said the entire ropeway system would be under constant CCTV surveillance.

Both the top executives claimed they have adequate experience of working in the country and abroad and they would be able to execute any challenging project with latest technology in ropeway.
