HYDERABAD: With his adversaries gunning for him, chief minister Kiran Kumar Reddy breathed defiance Tuesday and invoked the Congress high command to deter his detractors. “There is a Lakshman Rekha in the party,” he told reporters in his chambers at the Assembly. “No one should cross it. In the Congress, a long rope is given to dissidents to mend their ways. But stringent action will be taken against them at an appropriate time.”The chief minister appeared unruffled by the campaign to blame him for the party’s rout in the recent byelections. He said dissidence is not uncommon in the Congress and that he would not want join issue with his critics.“The high command will take care of that,” he said. The chief minister brushed off suggestions that there is political uncertainty in the state.“There is no instability. We are as stable as anyone else in the country,” he said. The only solution to the party’s problems at the moment was to strengthen it at the ground level and publicise the government’s welfare programmes. On the Telangana issue, the chief minister said suicides by youth serve no purpose.“If one keeps making the demand for Telangana overcome by emotion, it will lead nowhere. The party is seized of the demand. It has already consulted various stakeholders. There has been a delay since the party leadership is preoccupied with other issues,” he said.Referring to the Pranahita Chevella project, he said three clearances have already been obtained and another five were pending with the Centre.
