Killing of 4 Bodos sparked Assam violence: Shinde
Shinde said that a special investigation team has been set up by the state police for investigating the killings.

New Delhi: Assuring the people of Assam a foolproof security in the wake of fresh violence, Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Wednesday said that the tension in the northeast state started after the killing of four Bodo youth.

Making a suo moto statement on the Assam violence in Parliament, Shinde said that a special investigation team has been set up by the state police for investigating the killings.

“As per the report received from Assam government, there was simmering tension. Background of tension earlier resulted to this unfortunate incident. Communal incidents started after the killing of 4 Bodo youth. Tension spread to Dubri and Chirang and to other districts following the killings,” he said in Parliament.

Speaking on the relief measures, he said, “340 relief camps were set up. 14 additional companies of CRPF were sent as against 10 demanded by the state. Additional forces were deployed. 170 people have been arrested so far. Special investigation team has been set up by the state police for investigation.”

“Adequate ex-gratia grant will be provided to affected people. As on August 6, 245 relief camps with 3,64000 inmates are running. 95 relief camps have been closed and 1, 65000 people have returned to their homes,” he added.

He also said that if the situation arises, army would go to affected areas whenever required.
