After a clash between two communities over the route of a procession on the occasion of Ram Navami in Kalyanpur area near in Kanpur, the district magistrate on Wednesday appealed to people to maintain peace and harmony.
The situation is under control in the area and schools and colleges have been opened, DM Roshan Jacob told reporters, adding SMS alerts have also been sent out to people in the area.
A team of senior officials has already been sent to the area for investigations, he said. CCTV cameras have been installed in the area and a police picket has been posted, the DM said.
According to reports, the clash broke out in Rawatpur village of Kalyanpur area last evening when a procession on Ram Navami was diverted from its usual route citing poor condition of roads.
According to police, organisers did not take permission for diverting the procession.
More than half-a-dozen shops were vandalised and a jeep of the magistrate was burnt by the rioters. Police caned and fired shells of tear gas to bring the mob under control.
Around 12 persons were reported with minor injuries whereas some police officials also were reportedly injured in the incident.
Meanwhile, public on Wednesday faced inconvenience as political parties took out procession in favour of their Lok Sabha candidates in the city. Samajwadi Party candidate Surendra Mohan Aggarwal filed his nomination papers from the Kanpur Lok Sabha seat.
