Juvenile in Delhi’s Hit & Run Case Could be Tried as an Adult

New Delhi: Delhi Police on Thursday said that it will move an application to the Juvenile Justice Board to ensure that the juvenile accused in the Civil Lines Mercedes hit & run case, which left a 32-year-old management student dead, is tried as an adult.

The charge sheet in the case has revealed that an application under section 15(2) of the amended Juvenile Act will be moved in the court.

The accused juvenile, was five days short of turning 18 at the time of the incident on April 4 in which he reportedly ran over a management student Siddhartha Sharma at New Delhi’s Civil Lines area.

Reacting to the news, Shilpa Mittal sister of the deceased Siddhartha Sharma, the management student who was hit by the speeding Mercedes expressed her happiness on the development.

The accused juvenile’s father could also be charged with abetment to culpable homicide not amounting to murder in the coming days. Currently, both of father-son duo, who were arrested post an uproar over the incident, are out on bail.

A Delhi court had also upheld the bail granted to the juvenile and also left it to the Juvenile Justice Board to take a final call on the same, after questions were raised regarding the swift bail approval.
