New Delhi: Hours after the Mumbai police claimed a major breakthrough in the Mumbai molestation case with the arrest of 14 accused in the case, the Maharashtra Government said it will set up a fast-track court to conduct the trial.
“We have got nearly all the accused in the case. It is high time that they are punished strictly and without wasting any time," Deputy Chief Minister RR Patil said while talking to reporters on Friday.
The government will appeal to the High Court for setting putting the case on fast-track court, said Patil
He had, earlier, chaired a high-level 'routine review' meeting along with Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Chitkala Zutshi in Mumbai.
"We will also be writing to the Centre for making provisions in the law to enhance punishment for such offences," he was reported as saying.
Fourteen people from across the city were detained on Thursday evening and produced in court on Friday.
Though they were remanded to judicial custody till January 19 on Friday morning, all of them have been given bail on a surety of Rs 10,000 each.
The first breakthrough in the case came when two of the accused — Ravi Shukla and Nilesh — surrendered at the Juhu Police Station. This led to a chain of arrests across the metropolis.
