Surat: Reeling under the impact of demonetisation, a couple in Surat district of Gujarat got married in just Rs 500 after cash crunch hit their wedding budget.

Reportedly, Daksha and Bharat Parmar were set to get married before the demonetisation drive but families on both sides scaled down the costs due to the cash crunch.

Interestingly, the families cut down the cost of the wedding by serving only tea and water to the guests.

Speaking on the situation that the family had to face, the bride informed that the note ban was announced after the wedding date was fixed.

"We realised that it would be difficult to have a grand wedding, so we decided to make it a simple affair," said Daksha.

Echoing the sentiments of Daksha, the groom, Bharat, said that as the wedding date was already fixed, the families decided to give up on grand marriage and instead have a 'chai, paani' wedding.

Earlier last week, the Rs 500 crore wedding of former politician and Karnataka-based mining baron Janardhan Reddy's daughter sparked a row across the nation at a time when the whole of nation was witnessing serpentine queues outside banks and ATMs due to the cash crunch caused by the demonetisation drive announced by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 8.
