BALASORE: The Jalaka is in spate again. With the torrential rains lashing different parts of Balasore for the last few days, people in the northern parts are facing another flood, fourth in the season. The fear of floods in the Subarnarekha and the Budhabalanga also loomed large with the  Met officials predicting heavy rainfall for the next three days, following formation of yet another cyclonic system off the Orissa coast. With the cyclonic circulation over north-east Bay of Bengal, the Subanarekha catchments are likely to receive more rain, triggering another flash flood. Official sources said people residing in the villages along the rivers have been  alerted. However, the flood water of the Jalaka has inundated several villages in Basta block of the district.  While the flood water is flowing over Basta-Baliapal road near Kudia disrupting vehicular communication to Baliapal, at least 10 villages including Pegarpada, Dhalasahi and Laxmanpada are marooned. People fear devastation with the incidents of landslides in the river embankments and the old breaches yet to be repaired. On Wednesday, the Jalaka was flowing above the danger level with the Subanarekha and the Budhabalanga were below the warning level. The water level in the Jalaka was at 5.75 metre mark near Mathani against its red mark of 5.5 metre. The district has received 84.2-mm rainfall with Bahanaga recording the highest rainfall of 31 mm. A revenue official said the BDOs and the Tehsildars of Basta, Baliapal, Bhogarai, Jaleswar and Sadar blocks had been alerted following the warning of the low pressure and an imminent flood situation in the Subarnarekha. “We are ready for any eventuality,” he said.
