BANGALORE: December 31 is the deadline fixed by Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) to instal the Rain Water Harvesting (RWH) system in all buildings. According to a survey conducted in 2009, BWSSB has identified 58,000 structures measuring 40 x60 ft and above. It is all set to take action against those who fail to instal RWH before December 31. Rain Water Harvesting means collection and storage of rain water from roof top of a building or from a vacant land for use or for ground water recharge.Kemparamaiah, Chairman of the Committee on RWH told Express, “Out of the 58,000 buildings, more than 30,000 have already installed the RWH systems. We are expecting the remaining ones to be covered within the deadline. We have already issued two appeal letters and even our water inspectors and meter readers across the city have reminded the building owners to instal RWH by December 31. We will cut the water and sanitation connection of those who fail to instal RWH within the deadline”.“We might give a grace period of 15 days before disconnecting our services. We are not here to put unnecessary pressure on the people. RWH is full of benefits and this will ease the extra burden imposed on borewells. We have already created a lot of awareness about RWH and will further boost it up by giving advertisements and putting up display boards at important places” he added.Claiming that their buildings do not have any water services from BWSSB, some building owners in the city have shown no reaction to the RWH rule. Clearing the air on this, the chairman of the Committee on Rain Water Harvesting, said, “Even buildings and the apartments which do not have our water connections should instal RWH, as all sanitary connections are let out through BWSSB. We will cut those connections too.”
