KOCHI: Noted industrialist M C Jacob, 78, founder and chairman of AnnaKitex Groups, passed away on Sunday. His death came around 5.40 p.m. at a private hospital in Kochi where he was admitted since Friday following respiratory problems.He is survived by wife Eliamma, daughters Somi, Biji and sons Boby and Sabu. The funeral will be held at Kizhakkambalam St Peter's and St Paul's Church around 4 pm on Monday.In December 2010, the state government conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award on Jacob for his contributions towards the growth of industrial sector.On receiving the award, he had announced a pension scheme for the underprivileged people of Kizhakambalam using the award money of Rs 10 lakh. The project was aimed at providing a monthly pension of Rs 500 to 200 people.It was in 1968 that M C Jacob launched his business empire at Kizhakkambalam near Aluva with just eight people. The group was named Anna Aluminium.Apart from Anna Aluminium, Kitex, Saras Spices and Scoobee Day bags are the products of this group. The Kitex was launched in 1975 and Saras Spices in 1978.He hailed from an affluent family of plantation owners. The Kitex group, a listed company, is popular worldwide as the company has been exporting garments. Kitex is engaged in the production of fabrics made of cotton and other blends. They are marketed through a network of over 2000 authorised dealers.The Anna group is currently involved in the manufacture of aluminium sheets, circles, vessels and utensils, spices, fabrics, garments and marine exports. Anna Aluminium is the flagship company of the Anna Group.
