In what could be a repeat of diplomat Devyani Khobragade incident, India's High commissioner in New Zealand, Ravi Thapar, is preparing to leave the country amid allegations that his wife assaulted a staff member.
According to the police, a staff member at the Indian diplomatic mission in Wellington alleged that he was assaulted by the High Commissioner's wife. However, no formal complaint has been lodged against the diplomat's wife Urmila Thapar.
Confirming the development, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Vikas Swarup told CNN-IBN that Thapar was transferred back to the headquarters.
"Yes it is true. He (Ravi Thapar) has been transferred back to headquarters. We will issue a statement soon," said Swarup.
In 2013, the Ministry of External Affairs had faced a similar situation when IFS officer Debyani Khobragade was arrested in the US on allegations of ill-treating her domestic help.
