The organs of an accident victim were transplanted on to two Army officers in Army Hospital in Delhi.

New Delhi: In a first-ever case of its kind in the Indian Army the kidneys and liver of an accident victim were successfully retrieved at the Army Referral Hospital on Wednesday night and were transplanted on to two Army officers.

While one transplant took place in Army Hospital in Delhi the other was done on a lady at the Naval Hospital in Mumbai on Thursday.

The organs belonged to one Ramesh Chand, a 60-year-old man, who was critically injured in a hit-and-run road accident at Faridabad on Monday.

Ramesh Chand, who was father of Havaldar Madan Mohan of the Indian Army and Corporal Kamlesh Kumar of the Indian Air Force, was operated upon at Army Hospital, but breathed his last on Wednesday evening.

Chand's wife Hemlata immediately announced that she desired to donate the organs. However being a road accident case, post-mortem was a legal requirement in this case.

Though autopsies are generally not conducted in Army Hospitals, Dr Khakha Alexander of Safdarjung Hospital conducted the procedure in Army Hospital itself to facilitate the speedy retrieval of the organs.

In the night-long surgery, one kidney and liver were retrieved and transplanted to two serving soldiers, who were undergoing treatment in the same hospital.

One kidney was airlifted late on Wednesday night to Mumbai, where it was transplanted to the wife of a serving soldier. All the recipients are doing well.

With a computerised databank of patients in need of various organs, Army doctors are now in a position to send organs from one place to another with the required urgency. This move of a kidney from Delhi to Mumbai was also a first-of-its-kind move of organs.

The entire procedure was carried out under the supervision of Maj Gen OP Mathew, Brig RP Choubey and Col AK Seth of Army Hospital (R&R). In the last two months, this was the fourth case of organ transplant in Army Hospital here.
