Tension prevailed at the Collectorate here on Monday as a 24-year-old differently abled youth poured kerosene over himself and attempted self immolation demanding a bank loan.
When the grievance meet was on progress, Suresh, a differently-abled youth from Keerambur in Thuraiyur, arrived at the Collectorate in a motorised tri-cycle and poured kerosene concealed in his motor cycle all of a sudden over himself. Soon, cops on duty grabbed him and took him away. He later told media persons that he had been approaching a bank in Thuraiyur for a loan to start a workshop. However, the loan was denied.
He pointed out that he had already availed of two loans and repaid all the dues. Even after prompt repayment, officials were refusing to sanction a fresh loan, he said.
Out of frustration, Suresh said he attempted to take the extreme step on the Collectorate premises.
Collector Jayashree Muralidharan said Suresh did not approach her for a loan. However, she said in a statement that he had already availed of two loans with subsidy. During the interrogation, it was learnt that Suresh had received orders for the third loan through the Primary Coop bank in Thuraiyur on July 13. He reportedly did not want to avail of the loan from the primary cooperative bank and approached a nationalised bank in Thuraiyur.
