IIT undergraduate fee hiked to Rs 90,000 per year
A panel constituted by the Council of IITs had recommended a steep hike in fee to help IITs attain financial independence.

New Delhi: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Council on Monday gave a go-ahead to the proposed hike in the tuition fee for undergraduate students. With the go-ahead to the proposal, the fee will be hiked from Rs 50,000 to Rs 90,000 per year from 2013.

The announcement was made by Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister MM Pallam Raju on Monday.

Notably, the Kakodkar Committee had in 2011 recommended a steep hike of Rs 2-2.5 lakh per annum from the existing Rs 50,000. The Kakodkar Committee constituted by the Council of IITs had suggested the four-fold increase in tuition fee to help IITs attain financial independence.

The recommendations of the Kakodkar panel were being considered by an empowered task force and the standing committee of the IIT Council had met in Mumbai on November 5, 2011, where it had recommended the increase in the tuition fee.
