The state Assembly elections scheduled to be held early next year will ensure implementation of Centre’s decision to amend Article 371 of the Constitution to give special status to backward region of Hyderabad-Karnataka.
After the Cabinet Committee on Political Affairs clearance, the draft would now be placed before the Union Cabinet and tabled in Winter Session of Parliament which would commence from August 8. Once its gets the nod of the Parliament, a notification will be issued to start the actual process of implementing the Centre’s decision. This entire process is likely to be taken up expeditiously as this long-pending issue is expected to yield rich dividend to the Congress in the Assembly elections.
In fact, the BJP too will not lag behind in making it an election issue. The BJP government in the state has been demanding the Centre to accord special status to the region.Former minister and Hyderabad Karnataka Horata Samiti President, Patil said, “It is normal for political parties to try and take political mileage out of such major issues. But people of the region know who has been fighting for their cause. I hope the Centre will expedite the process and actual benefits will start reaching people within next six months.” Patil, who has been leading the struggle to get the Telangana model of special status to the region said both state and the Central government will have equal responsibilities in implementation of the special status.
“It is still not clear if it is going to be on the lines of Telangana or Vidarbha model. In Telengana model people of the region will have the benefit of reservation in education and employment while in Vidarbha model, Centre would give special grants for development of the region,” he said.
