New York: An untitled oil and acrylic painting on canvas painted by M F Husain in the mid-1970s depicting two women has been sold at a Sotheby's auction in New York for a $374,500 (Rs 1.88 crore).

The total sale at the auction of Indian and Southeast Asian Art, which included paintings and works of art, on March 18 was $3,212,501 (Rs 16.12 crore).

FN Souza's untitled oil work depicting the twin themes of sex and religion brought $302,500 while another untitled oil work of a nude woman by Akbar Padamsee's went under the hammer for $242,500.

The auction also saw the sale of many other works of Husain and Souza besides those of Tyeb Mehta, SH Raza and Ram Kumar among others.

"Our strategy for this sale was to put together a tightly edited group of the finest works available, sagely estimated, and we were delighted to see the market respond so positively," Director, Sotheby's Indian & Southeast Asian department, Zara Porter Hill said.

"It was especially encouraging that 100 per cent of the top 10 lots were bought by, or for, established collectors, highlighting the strength at the top end of the market," Hill added.
