If all goes well, the boat jetty proposed at the Vyttila Mobility Hub will become a reality within next six months. According to officials with the Vyttila Mobility Hub Society (VMHS), the estimates of the proposed boat jetty have been completed and it will be submitted for approval at a high-level executive meeting of the hub members which will be convened within the next two weeks.
The project is being handled by KITCO. “We have taken the complete estimate of the project. For the construction of the exterior parts of the boat jetty alone, we are estimating a cost of `1 crore. The amount will be submitted before the executive body for approval within two weeks,” said officials with VMHS.
Once the estimates are approved, tenders will be floated and the work will begin within a few weeks. “We are planning to open the boat jetty to the public by April 2013. The boat jetty is poised to become one of Kochi’s best and most efficient water transport system as it will connect all major locations within and outside the city. Inter-district services will also be introduced at the jetty in the long run,” said another official with the VMHS.
The boats will traverse through Champakara canal. “Water transport has a huge potential in our city. However, it is very unfortunate that the National Highways here are being under utilised. This project is also expected to pave way for better water transport in the near future.”
The Kerala State Inland Navigation Corporation has been appointed the task of roping in new and modern boats. “Since hurdles such as low-level bridges can arise along the routes, we have instructed KSINC to introduce small sized yet powerful and spacious boats.”
