The Chief Minister said in a written reply that according to the Centre for Earth Science Studies, the stench, which triggered panic in the coast recently, was caused by Dimethyl sulphide, which is produced following an increase in the presence of minute algae. Sudden rains and the influx of freshwater into the coastal waters triggered this phenomenon, the Chief Minister said.
