Is the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) headed the Lokayukta way after July 28?
With the state government initiating the process tardily, the posts of two members and chairman of SHRC are likely to fall vacant, making it just another headless organisation in the state from July 28. Nearly 14 years after the implementation of the Protection of Human Rights Act, the SHRC was established in June 2005 and Justice S R Nayak was appointed its first chairman on July 25, 2007.
Initially, four members were appointed to the Commission and later reduced to two by an amendment. With SHRC chairman Justice Nayak demitting office on July 25, the government caught in petty politicking, skipped the deadline to appoint a successor. The process should have begun in as early as May, Justice Nayak said while interacting with reporters here. He asserted that the process should have been as smooth as Justice Shivraj Patil taking charge when Justice Santosh Hegde stepped down as chief of Lokayukta.
The existing member can serve as ‘officiating chairman,’ but there’s a catch. B Parthasarathy’s term ended on March 20 and other member RH Raddi will demit office on July 27.
