THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The dreams of the legal fraternity in the capital city to reinstate the High Court Bench have faded with the agitation in this regard slowly coming to an end. The agitation had lost the vigour after the demise of former MP Varkala Radhakrishnan, who was the patron of the agitation. Now, even with favourable conditions with Central and State Governments led by the Congress, a Congress MP and a pro-UDF Bar Association, there seems to be no signs of the revival of the agitation. With the State Government not referring the issue in the MPs’ conference held here the other day, Attingal MP A Sampath, an advocate himself, had brought the issue again to the fore. He has demanded the State Government to make its stance clear on the issue. In a statement here on Sunday, Sampath also demanded the government to make its stance clear on the future of State Administrative Tribunal, which was brought to the city as a result of the efforts of the previous LDF Government. Sampath, in his statement, said that the issue of High Court Bench was a prominent subject in the agenda of the MPs’ conference during the tenure of the LDF Government. But the present Government has not shown any interest in taking up the cause, he said. ‘’Chief Minister Oommen Chandy dismissed my question on the issue with just a smile in the MPs’ conference the other day. The government’s stance is evident from this,’’ Sampath said. He also said that the functioning of the State Administrative Tribunal was in uncertainty due to the lethargic attitude of the UDF Government and the Governor. It was over three years ago that the agitation demanding a High Court Bench in the capital city was kick-started by the legal fraternity. The advocates in the city had even observed the 1,000th day of the agitation on November 11, 2010.
