BANGALORE: Time has come to bid adieu to the trees on Sankey Tank Road. The road widening work began on Wednesday and the BBMP will axe more than 500 trees in the coming days. The High Court recently gave a green signal to BBMP to go ahead with the widening of the Sankey Tank Road and allowed NGO Hasiru Usiru to coordinate the works in ensuring protection, preservation and extension of tree growth on the sides of the road. Further, the NGO has been given the liberty to move the court, if the BBMP fails to comply with the Tree Preservation Act, while cutting trees.Mayor Sharadamma who initiated the road widening work, when contacted, said that work has started. It will take one year to complete the road widening work. “Now, it might cause inconvenience to public due to the works undertaken. But one should think beyond this. The road users often complain about the traffic jam. The widening of the road, it will give us a permanent solution,” she said.
