BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has decided to sink 50,000 deep borewells by January, 2014 under the Biju Krushak Bikash Yojana to increase irrigation potential.A decision to this effect was taken at a high-level meeting presided over by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at the Secretariat on Wednesday. Official sources said that so far 10,788 deep borewells have been installed under the programme and out of which 1,785 have been given electricity connection. A release from the Chief Minister’s office said that 8,000 more will be supplied power by June next year.The scheme was implemented in 17 districts in 2010-11. This has now been extended to 256 blocks of 26 districts. Micro-irrigation work is also being implemented through the deep borewells. Irrigation is being ensured to 10 hectare through one deep bore well.It was decided that irrigation will be extended to 10 lakh hectare through one lakh deep borewells during the next five years. The Chief Minister directed the officials to intensify the implementation of the programme in KBK (undivided Kalahandi, Balangir and Koraput districts) region.Similarly, work on 15 cluster and 174 mega lift irrigation points has been taken up. Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Patnaik, Development Commissioner RN Senapati and officials attended the meeting.
