It appears that the railway system is grappling with a series of unfortunate incidents in recent times. Freight trains are involved in accidents at times; while at other times, passenger trains face derailments. The frequency of such incidents is alarming, and it has once again raised concerns about the safety measures in place within the railway network. In one such incident, on Tuesday morning, a goods train derailed, further disrupting the already fragile railway communication between Northeast India and other parts of the country. The accident took place at Bedgara, near New Maynaguri (Jalpaiguri, West Bengal), where the train unexpectedly veered off the tracks. Local residents were startled by a loud, thunderous noise that broke the calm of the early morning. Rushing to the scene, they found that several wagons of the freight train had derailed.
The accident caused immediate chaos in the area, with people gathering around in concern. The accident, occurring early in the day, led to widespread anxiety among the local population. Realising the gravity of the situation, authorities were promptly notified. The railway department, upon receiving the report, wasted no time and began mobilising resources to investigate the cause of the derailment.
According to local reports, officials from the railway department, along with police personnel, quickly arrived at the scene to assess the damage and initiate an investigation. The railway authorities are now carefully examining how such a mishap occurred, as they attempt to pinpoint any technical or structural failures that may have contributed to the derailment.
In a statement, the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) of Alipurduar confirmed that five wagons of a goods train, travelling from Assam to New Jalpaiguri, had derailed at Bedgara station. The DRM also reassured the public that the railway department has launched a detailed investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and to prevent future occurrences.
