BANGALORE: In an effort to make farming a sustainable activity and to provide timely and required scientific agricultural inputs, the University of Agricultural Sciences (UAS), GKVK, launched two distance education courses for farmers here on Sunday.Inaugurating the programme Dr A S Anand, chairman, Karnataka Organic Farming Mission said, “This kind of courses should be aimed at bringing the farmers and scientists closer. Of lately, the farmers’ are deserting villages, so such education should be helpful.” He also urged the farmers to concentrate on organic farming.The two courses, which is said to be the first of its kind in the country, is set to commence this November. Dr K Narayana Gowda, Vice-Chancellor, UAS, GKVK said, “As of now, we are starting two courses - one of which is a one year course with two semesters in integrated farming and the other a six months course in post-harvest management of food grains. The courses are open for people above 18 years who are involved in farming activities and have passed 7th standard.”The 11 Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) spread across the state will be networked with the Agricultural Research Centres, UAS and the KVKs will serve as study centres for the farmers. Once the farmers enrol themselves they can have personal interactions with the counsellors.Courses in seed production, ornamental seeds, floriculture and pest management have been proposed.
