New Delhi: There is no end to the row over Union Minister Giriraj Singh's racist comments. Strongly objecting to comments by ministers, controversial British filmmaker Leslee Udwin who directed the documentary on Nirbhaya said that Singh is "no better than a rapist".
"This really sickens me. The hypocrisy of mini mouthed, unthinking comments by those who say my film gives platform to rapists, but why has Indian Parliament for many years, given a platform to politicians making such misogynist comments. They are no worse, no better than Mukesh Singh's comments," she said.
She also added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should sack ministers like Giriraj Singh. "We need to understand the issues here. I think anyone who makes such a statement should be removed from office or any authority of power," he said.
Singh had commented that the colour of Sonia Gandhi's skin had made her the Congress President. "If Rajiv Gandhi had married a Nigerian and if she wasn't white skinned, would Congress accept her as a leader", the BJP Lok Sabha MP from Bihar's Nawada constituency had said.
However, after facing flak from the Bharatiya Janata party, Singh apologised for making the statement. Expressing remorse, Singh said, "Many things are said off the record in many ways but if they have hurt Rahul or Sonia ji in any way, I regret."
The BJP had distanced itself from the remarks and said that they did not associate themselves with the statement. "One should restrain themselves from making such a statement. Everyone's focus should be on development and governance," BJP said.
Refusing to react on the racist barb against her, Sonia Gandhi called him a person with "narrow mentality". "It's difficult for me to react on remarks of such people having such a narrow mentality. I cannot comment on such remarks," said Sonia while refusing to elaborate.
