KOCHI: The 26th general council meeting of the of the Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) will be convened on Thursday to discuss various development projects. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will chair the meeting which will be attended by Excise Minister K Babu, Public Works Minister V K Ebrahim Kunju and MLAs of Ernakulam district. A decision on various development projects worth `70 crore will be taken at the meeting. Projects for the development of Pullekkad, Thanthonni Thuruth and Kurunkotta islands; solid waste treatment in Mulavukad island; water transport project connecting various islands; renovation of beach and coastal roads; bridge in Valiyavattom island; land acquisition for road development in Mulavukad island; Kothad-Chennoor bridge; drinking water project for Kadamakkudi, Edavanakkad and Kuzhuppilly; the proposal submitted by Salarpuria properties for constructing a bridge to Thanthonni Thuruth and the first phase of GIDA master plan are some of the major projects which will be discussed at the meeting on Thursday.GIDA has formulated a project to generate electricity from the garbage dumped in Mulavukad island. The proposed plant, being set up at an estimated cost of `5.5 crore, can treat six tonnes of garbage a day. The project is being implemented by GIDA in association with the Kerala Suchitwa Mission. The last general council of GIDA had approved the proposal for starting a boat service connecting various islands. A water transport terminal will be built in connection with it on the land in possession of GIDA on the Goshree- Chathyath Road. The procedures for purchasing a double-decker boat have been completed.Construction of a bridge connecting Moolampilly and Pizhala is another major project. Petitions regarding freezing of land transaction in eight villages in the wake of the proposed coastal highway project will also be considered at the meeting. Another project worth `23.6 crore has been prepared to reconstruct the beach road and to connect it with the road between Elankunnapuzha and Njarakkal.
