THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Efforts never go unrequited once you develop a fire in the belly. The dictum holds true for Sinimol K Nair, a 36-year-old homemaker based in the city who won the first rank in the BA Malayalam examination. When the results of the Kerala University examinations 2011 were announced, Sinimol, a student under the Institute of Distance Education (IDE) and a mother of two girls, sprang a surprise with an 84 per cent aggregate, outdoing all regular college-going students.“Though there were only two contact classes a week, often I could not attend the classes due to my family responsibilities. Still, I squeezed in time to study after finishing off my household chores.  My family, classmates and teachers were so supportive. My husband, Unnikrishnan, who is working abroad, even took three weeks leave to help me study during the final year examinations and to take care of the children. My classmates kept me updated with examination procedures and sent me the copies of old question papers. I also sought the guidance of some retired teachers,’’ says Sinimol.Amid accolades, Sinimol still carries the pang of an unfulfilled dream, a degree in Mathematics. Years back, during her final year as a degree student in Mathematics, bad luck came in the form of an accident that left her with a fractured leg. Nearly six months of bed rest put her education at a halt. Soon, she got married and flew to Qatar with her husband.Years later, Sinimol returned home with the kids. ‘’We thought that the kids should grow here. It was during those days that I actually felt that I could still realize my unfulfilled dream. I talked it over with my husband and he was so delighted to hear my wish to study further,’’ she says.An avid reader of Malayalam literature from childhood days and an ardent fan of litterateurs like T Padmanabhan, M T and Madhavikutty, she didn’t give a second thought and opted for Malayalam. But  her kids were so important to her and hence she joined the Institute of Distance Education under the Kerala University so that she could spend time with her children even while pursuing her studies.“Sini’s achievement is really encouraging to every student who studies under the distance education mode. Her enthusiasm and drive have been marvelous from the very beginning,” says AM Unnikrishnan, Co-ordinator of Malayalam at IDE.The topper is now raring for greater heights for she has already applied for the post-graduation programme under the IDE. She is all thanks to the almighty as she never expected such a stunning victory. She adds, “I don’t know what God has in store for me. If I am blessed, I would like to be a lecturer.”Sini has two daughters, Gayathri Unnikrishnan, a plus-one student at Christ Nagar School and Poornima Unnikrishnan, a sixth standard student at L’ecole Chempaka School.
