New Delhi: No signs of respite from cold in North India could be seen, with fresh bout of snowfall in higher parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh recorded on Sunday. Tourist spot Nainital also witnessed heavy snowfall Sunday night.
Other parts of North India received heavy rainfall as a result of the Western Disturbances, the Indian Meteorological Department said. Meanwhile, Delhittes woke up to a cloudy weather on Sunday while some parts experienced slight rains.
In Himachal Pradesh, the biting cold wave conditions continued without any let up in most parts of the state as minimum temperatures further dropped by one to two deg even as stormy conditions abated. The state capital Shimla shivered at minus 0.2 degrees Celsius.
The minimum temperatures dropped to minus 4 and minus 2.5 degrees Celsius at Kalpa and Keylog in tribal districts of Kinnaur and Lahaul and Spiti, which received 40 cms and 15 cms of snow. Meanwhile, heavy snowfall, accompanied with strong winds persisted in upper parts of the Uttarakhand, confining people indoors.
Badrinath, Kedarnath and Gangotri among other areas received snowfall this morning, plummeting temperatures in the region. Further north, the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley reeled under severe cold conditions with the weather office sounding an avalanche warning in snow-bound areas of north Kashmir.
Summer capital Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 2.9 degrees Celsius, slightly down from the previous night's 3.1 degrees Celsius. The scenic resort of Gulmarg recorded a minimum of minus 11.2 degrees Celsius while Pahalgam in south Kashmir registered a low of minus 0.5 degrees Celsius.
