KOCHI: The students and staff of Federal Institute of Science and Technology (FISAT), Angamaly, marked one of their most awaited days by gathering to collectively take thousand self-portraits in fraction of a second. This was in an attempt to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. Entry or not is yet to be known. It was the idea of doing something innovative that led to such a novel thought, said Jacob Peter, an official from FISAT. “The National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut, had come up with such an innovative idea earlier. They tried to create a world record by opening thousands of Amul bottles. We personally contacted Guinness World Records who gave us this idea,” he said.Almost every photography enthusiast participated in one of the biggest challenges ever. “Not only students but even the staff participated in this mammoth event. Students from batches like BTech, MTech, MCA and MBA participated. P V Mathew, chairman, FISAT institutions, K J Sebastian, vice-president, managing committee, K S M Panikker, principal, FISAT, and other staff also participated in the event,” he said.Peter added that the students were arranged in grids with a steward for each one. Each steward was to assess the photographs clicked by the members of the grid. “They were also two judges who will look into the minute details of the photograph clicked. Based on their assessment Guinness World Records will decide on whether we have qualified or not,” he said.Peter said that the event was organised as a curtain raiser for ‘Bharatam,’ organised in connection with the decennial celebration of the institution. “We organise this event once in four years. Hence, we chose this event as a platform to set the world record.” “Taking a thousand photographs in the fraction of a second needed meticulous care,” he added.Paul P Joseph, Mookkannoor Grama Panchayat president and Ajay Menon, a renowned photographer were the judges. He said that the final confirmation and the formal announcement of the record from the Guinness World Records authorities will be done in a couple of weeks.
