Valencia: Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has applauded Fernanso Alonso’s achievement at this weekend’s European Grand Prix, terming it as “extraordinary”. The Spaniard won an incident-filled race on Sunday to become the first driver to win two races this season, and in doing so reclaimed the lead in the Driver's Championship with a 20-point margin over Red Bull's Mark Webber.
"This is Ferrari at its very best, the one everyone wants to see," said di Montezemolo. "Fernando was extraordinary, and it's hard to find the words to describe his race which has shown the spirit of a team that never gives up."
The Ferrari president also hoped that Alonso’s victory would give a grieving Italy reason to cheer, seeing as it came a month after the quake-hit Italian region of Emilia Romagna.
"The win also reflects the spirit of our homeland in Emilia Romagna where so many people are going through a particularly difficult time after the earthquake a few weeks back," said di Montezemolo. "Let's hope this victory will at least have put a smile on their faces."
