Feeling the rhythm
Feeling the rhythm

The Rhythm of Life organised by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations, Chennai headed by Manoranjitham, director was a seamless presentation, that engaged the audience at Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, Chetpet.

It was presented by a dance company from Brigham Young University in Utah, USA.

I should admit that it was the best contemporary dance I have seen in recent times.

We found the rhythm of the world around us, brought to life through dance and music, with a kaleidoscope of motion, colour and sound.

the rhythm If their presentation all in a day, explored the commonality of work in daily life, the dance of remembrance from the women, the pioneer attribute to women of faith and courage, opened our hearts, virtually to the struggle and the emotional torments.

Chakra that followed was based on tantric and yogic, tradition of Hinduism and Buddhism, when the wheel like vortices in the body were explored — as it is believed that the energy enters the body, central to the transmission of energy.

Exploring the diversity of American contemporary dance, this theatre certainly brought to life, a kinetic whirlwind of the motion, colour and fun.

Another notable performance this week, on the eve of the 7th Annual Day of Srishti Academy was an academy of performing arts headed by Natyajyothi Shruthi Shoby, trained by gurus like Kalamandalam Kavitha Krishnakumar and Kalakshetra’s Sahadevan.

Shruthi Shoby is a proficient choreographer for Mohiniyattam, for renowned schools and colleges in Chennai and for popular dance realty shows on TV.

The invocatory item presented on the occasion, was an exhilarating fusion piece, showcasing two different classical forms Bharathanatyam and Mohiniattam.

The items ranged, from describing the eternally charming, playful incarnation of Lord Vishnu to the Swarajathis presented by the tiny tots in Hamsadwani raga.

This was fascinating indeed! The crowning glory was the thillana in raga Behag, a fitting finale with the virtuosity of the music, complex footwork and captivating poses.

We agreed no less with Ramaswamy, director, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, who presided the event, “that these youngsters had passed the stage of ambivalence”.

He added that the sincere dedication and involvement of the founder.

Shruthi Shoby will take her to great heights of performing success in teaching and imparting the knowledge of the great art form, Mohiniyattam.
