Srinagar: National Conference (NC) president Farooq Abdullah on Monday added colour to the Republic Day celebrations in Kashmir valley when he joined the members of the folk dancers and danced to the tunes of bande paethar (Kashmiri folk dance).
Abdullah, who was among the VIPs attending the Republic Day function in New Delhi at Bakshi Stadium - the venue of the main Republic Day function - could not resist himself and danced with the members of the folk of state cultural academy.
Clad in Kashmiri ‘pheran’ (long gown), he danced with the members of the troupe for 10 minutes which not only prolonged the celebrations but also entertained the small group of people.
The atmosphere in and around the stadium was relaxed as people in the valley had a break with enhanced security trappings usual on such occasions after a gap of 20 years.
It was for the first time that people were seen moving freely on roads without any hindrance of security arrangements since eruption of militancy in 1989-90.
Militancy related violence has witnessed a 40 per cent drop in the valley as compared against 2007.
