The Vellore unit of the Tamizhaga Vivasayigal Sangam (TVS) has appealed to the government of India to roll back the Central Ground Water Regulation Bill.
In a protest organised on Monday by the members of the TVS, led by its district secretary C K Dhanapal, the farmers said classification of ground water extraction regions should not be applied for farming activities.
The sangam demanded waiving of all farm loans availed of by the farmers from any banking institutions without imposing any conditions.
The members urged the governments to utilise the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme for farming activities only. All the subsidies cancelled by the Central government for inorganic fertilisers must be revived and steps taken to bring down the prices of fertilisers. The entire power generated from the Koodankulam atomic facility should be allocated to Tamil Nadu. The government should resolve bilateral water issues between Tamil Nadu and Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka where the upper riparian States had been depriving Tamil Nadu of its right to water by reducing the flow, they said.
They demanded fixing the price for the farm produce based on expenses incurred in production. They opposed government’s move to acquire farm lands between Bangalore and Cochin for the proposed gas pipeline.
