A 29-year-old conman, who allegedly cheated the staff of an automobile showroom here by posing as a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) official, was arrested by police on Sunday.
S Srinivasan, a resident of Kandasamy Layout, Lakshmi Mill Road, purchased a new motorcyle after securing a loan from a private finance company, police said. He stopped paying the dues after the first few months.
In the meantime, when the Jaykrishna Automobiles Showroom on 100 Feet Road announced an exchange scheme for two-wheelers, Srinivasan approached them with his bike. The staff at the showroom asked him to furnish the RC book and other papers for the vehicle. However, he did not have these papers as he was yet to pay up on the loan. Srinivasan then flashed a fake ID card and told the staff that he was a Sub Inspector with the CBI.
Believing his words, the staff agreed to take his bike on exchange and paid him Rs 30,000 for the vehicle. However, Srinivasan rode of with the vehicle soon after.
When the staff called and asked him to return the bike, Srinivasan threatened that he would file cases against them. Based on a complaint, police arrested Srinivasan , a plumber by profession, on Sunday.
