Deputy Chief Minister K S Eshwarappa pulled up officials for the lapses in executing drought relief works and directed them to open goushalas (cowsheds) in all 16 hoblis of drought-hit Chamrajnagar.

Presiding over a drought relief review meeting here on Sunday, he sought an explanation as to why only six goushalas were opened in the district, which is the worst drought-hit. He said the government has decided to purchase fodder from Punjab, Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh.

The authorities were told to distribute mineral mixture nutrient packets given by Karnataka Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd along with fodder to improve cattle’s health.

Eshwarappa was also irked at the delay in executing drinking water schemes as the Chamundeshwari Electrical Supply Company officials had not installed transformers that could be used to run tube wells. He said, of the 534 works that needed transformers only 334 works had got it. Chamrajnagar and Kollegal taluk alone need 51 transformers.

The zilla panchayat had paid Rs 7 crore indent to purchase transformers, he said and added that he would direct the Chamundeshwari Electrical Supply Company MD to purchase additional transformers and stop giving temporary connections to check overload.

Turning his attention to employment guarantee schemes, he said Chamrajnagar district had not utilised the Rs 4.5 crore alloted last year under the NREGA and the `19 crore for the current financial year.

When Congress legislators H S Mahadeva Prasad and Narendra alleged that payment to the tune of Rs 1 crore had not been made for the works done during the previous year, he instructed the officials to immediately utilise Rs 4.5 crore and take up works with the available funds to check the migration of labourers.
