Kolkata/ New Delhi: A senior West Bengal Minister on Wednesday said Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee should either end her 10-day-old hunger strike or allow a medical team to examine her health.
Banerjee is protesting against the state government allotting land to the Tata Motors’ small car project in Singur in Hoogly district.
Banerjee should either end her fast or allow a medical team to monitor her health "since the right to die is not guaranteed by the Constitution," said Transport Minister Subhas Chakraborty.
Chakraborty was hopeful of a "peaceful settlement" on the issue and said Banerjee must not create trouble in the state by wilfully causing harm to her health.
"I am nobody to request her (Banerjee) personally when requests have already been made by my state party secretary and Left Front chairman Biman Bose and Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee in writing to withdraw her fast which might lead to a deterioration in her health," he said.
Chakraborty said the car plant can’t be allowed to suffer, as it would send a wrong signal to the country. "No development project should be stalled just for political agitation against it. People will not allow it."
In a related development, a Trinamool Congress-led farmers committee in Singur on Wednesday gave a call for boycott of all goods manufactured by the Tata group.
The hunger stike came up in Lok Sabha where MPs urged Banerjee to end her fast. "We appeal her to call off her hunger strike. I have already appealed to her, written a letter to her. We are concerned about her health and well being. We hope she may consider it favourably", Speaker Somnath Chatterjee said during Zero Hour.
He asked the member not to speak about the Singur issue saying one cannot raise a state matter in the House.
