DHARMAPURI: DMK veteran and father of Dharmapuri MP R Thamaraiselvan, LP Ramar, passed away at his residence in Illakiyampatti here on Thursday. He was 86. Ramar launched the DMK’s first branch in Dharmapuri district in the combined district of Salem at Illakiyampatti in 1959 and hoisted the DMK flag in the presence of former chief minister C N Annadurai.He was imprisoned 26 times during the anti-Hindi agitation and his house was vandalised by miscreants on May 21, 1991, when former PM Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated at Sriperumbudur.
