CHENNAI: Sycophancy marked the day-long hunger strike against milk price and bus fare hikes at the DMDK headquarters in Koyambedu on Thursday. Most of the speakers delivered high-voltage speeches praising their leader, Vijayakant, instead of highlighting the plight of the common man who were affected by the hikes. One among them even went to the extent of expressing his happiness for getting kicked and beaten by the actor-turned-politician, since he considered it the path to progress. “You can find cheetahs and tigers, but our leader is the real lion,” TV serial actor Rajendranath claimed. Taking a dig at PMK leader Dr S Ramadoss he said, “Vijaykanth has crushed the mango (PMK’s party symbol).” Among the few leaders who spoke on issues concerning the common man were Premalatha Vijayakanth, and DMDK Presidium Chairman Panruti S Ramachandran.Meanwhile, in other parts of the State, functionaries and cadre also observed a fast protesting the hike in milk price and bus fares. Singai Jinnah, district secretary of the DMDK, led the agitation in Ramanathapuram. .In Erode, DMDK state propaganda secretary and Erode East MLA V-C Chandrakumar headed the stir. He pointed out that the recent milk price hike would help private dairies earn `6,000 crore profit per annum. Of the 152 lakh litre produced in the State, Aavin buys 20 lakh litre and the rest is bought by private dairies. “Similarly, a 100 per cent bus fare hike only helps private operators rather than TNSTC,” he said.In Tiruchy, the party’s district (urban) secretary A R Vijayarajan flayed the hike in prices and said the TNSTC officials who were not able to manage the corporations in a profitable manner were drawing hefty salaries and should be reduced. In Vellore, DMDK party cadre held a fast near Anna Kalaiarangam. DMDK district secretary Viswanathan, MLA Manoharan, union secretary Babu, and town secretary Shanmugam were present.
