A four-year-old girl was allegedly raped by the brother of her tuition teacher in Delhi’s Pandav Nagar on Saturday. The girl was raped by a 34-year-old man, said the police, adding that the accused has been arrested.

Delhi Eastern Range’s Additional CP Sagar Singh Kalsi said, “In Mandawali Police Station, yesterday a complaint was received that a 4-year-old girl was raped by a 34-year-old man at the place where she goes for tuition. We have registered a case and the man was arrested.”

The case comes under the limits of Mandawali Police Station. The victim informed her parents that when the teacher was away, his brother raped her and threatened not to tell anybody about it, reported NDTV, adding that the private parts of girl are swelled.

The victim is sent to AIIMS and is accompained by her mother and father. She is undergoing counselling, said police.

The kin of the victim and some locals have now gathered outside the house of the accused and are vandalising cars in the vicinity. Police said a large number of police personnel and paramilitary forces have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

Kalsi added that a rumour was spread that no actions were being taken so people have gathered and are protesting. “We also got to know about some incidents of vandalism. Police reached the spot and now the situation is peaceful. The girl is also safe,” he added.

DCP east district Apoorva Gupta informed news agency, PTI about the misinformation spreading in the area. She added that the victim is alright. There are many false messages and rumours circulating on social media about this case, she said.

The incident also drew political reactions with the BJP demanding strict action against the accused, and the AAP claiming it is a sign of poor law and order situation. Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva strongly condemned the incident and demanded strict action against the accused.

AAP leader and Delhi Finance Minister Atishi termed the incident a “blot on the national capital”. In a letter to Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena, she said it has been reported in the media that a four-year-old girl has been raped in Pandav Nagar in east Delhi.

“Such a horrific crime is a blot on the national capital. It is a sign of the poor law- and-order situation that women and young girls are not safe in Delhi. Criminals committing violent crimes against women and children have no fear of quick and strong action by the Delhi Police,” she wrote.

She further said she is writing to him not just as a minister, but a woman who lives in Delhi.

“Article 239AA of the Constitution gives you the responsibility for Police and Public Order. Kindly ensure that swift and strongest possible action is taken against the perpetrators of this horrendous crime. Please also ensure that Delhi becomes a city that is safe for women. The women of Delhi are looking towards you to fulfil your constitutional obligation to provide them a safe city,” read the letter.
