Jammu: Police have arrested the father of the three girls who had been abandoned at the railway station. His name is Ram Kumar. He is a rickshaw puller, hailing from Allahabad.
The police said he had left his children at the railway station after his wife left him two weeks ago.
Three sisters, with the eldest being three years, were allegedly abandoned by their father and rescued by a sweeper at the Jammu railway station, police said on Monday.
The girls were abandoned on Saturday morning at the railway station by their father Ram Paul after their mother Santosh, who was allegedly having an illicit affair with another man, fled from home last week, Sub Divisional Police Officer, Railways, Dushyant Sharma said.
Paul, resident of Bihar, has been detained by the police from Channi Himmat area of the city.
"We have detained Paul," he said, adding investigation into the case is on.
"The girls were sent to the orphanage home in R S Pura on Sunday. But now they have been brought back to police station," Sharma said.
"We will take a decision today on where to send them, whether to their father or to some orphanage home," he said. Paul during investigation told police that he left his three daughters at the station as he was unable to look after them since his wife deserted him last week.
The girls were first noticed by a sweeper Gurdev Singh near the computer room at the Jammu railway station. The children were later shifted to an orphanage centre.
"After noticing that no elder was accompanying the girls, I took care of them before they were shifted to the orphanage," said Gurdev Singh.
"I provided them water, milk and food. I didn't sleep the whole night and was attending them. I also gave them a couple of blankets," he said.
The eldest of the three girls, three-year-old Kajal even does not know the names of her other two siblings. All she can tell is that they were left at the station by their mother, who went for work and didn't return.
"Maa Na Chhoda Tha (mother left us here)", Kajal said.
