Following the landfall of severe cyclonic storm Remal, heavy rains and gusty winds are creating havoc at the duars of West Bengal. As per the report of PTI, at least six people have lost their lives in West Bengal as Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc across the state and neighbouring country Bangladesh with wind speeds reaching up to 135 km per hour. According to the Meteorological Department, the three districts of Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri in North Bengal are expected to have high rainfalls. Thunderstorm warnings have also been passed to the adjacent areas.

The road from Madarihat to Totopara in the Alipurduar district is said to be washed away due to heavy rainfall and flash floods. Being an area adjacent to Bhutan, the rivers of this area originate from the Bhutan Hills. When it rains, the river overflows and the risk of flash floods becomes dangerous. The head of a panchayat samiti and her driver had a close shave on Tuesday, May 28, in the Alipurduar district after their car got stuck in a stream during a flash flood caused by heavy rainfall after cyclone Remal.

The car of Madarihat Panchayat Samiti president Asha S Bomjan was washed away in a river in the Totopara area. Asha Bomjan, the Sabhapati of Madarihat panchayat samiti, was on her way home in Totopara, around 28 km away from Madarihat, when the incident happened. In an interaction with the Telegraph, Asha Bomjan said that the rainfall was heavy but initially, the water level was low which surged within minutes.

“As almost half of the vehicle submerged in the water, both my driver and I jumped into the water. The water almost reached our necks. We started floating and suddenly spotted a tree. We desperately moved towards it and gripped it hard.” said Asha S Bomjan. They were stuck for three hours. She added that she had a terrible experience and survived by god’s grace.

The water levels receded at night and made it back to the bank of the stream. She reached her home in Totopara around 4 am the next day.
