KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala said here the other day that restricting flow of devotees to Sabarimala shrine raising technical aspects in the name of tiger sanctuary would have serious consequences.
He demanded that the State Govt should convey to the Union Environment Ministry to exempt Sabarimala from the regulation.
He said that around six crore devotees from all over India and abroad visited the shrine every year and any regulation on the pilgrimage would cause hardships to the devotees. “It is estimated that there is a 15 per cent overall increase in the number of devotees visiting the temple. Any move to regulate or control the movement of pilgrims to the shrine, which is situated inside the Periyar tiger sanctuary, should be opposed,” he said.
Chennithala said that already 12.67 hectares of forest land had been earmarked with the permission of Wildlife Board for providing better facility to thousands of devotees.
