In a massive operation in Jharkhand, around 3000 detonators have been recovered by CRPF’s 172nd Battalion. What’s more concerning for the forces is that these are a new type of detonators which are non-electric, faster, quieter, safer to handle and store. Importantly, they are less sensitive to radio frequency, making them more dangerous than the usual ones.
According to officials, the Shock Tube detonators were made by a company situated in Maharashtra, approximately 1300 kilometre away from the place of recovery.
A senior official, aware of the development, told News18 that these types of detonators are water-resistant, a substitute for detonating wire, and can be triggered instantly or with a delay, with high abrasion resistance.
According to sources, during an operation in Chaibasa, Kolhan area, 3,000 new detonators have been recovered. Officials are concerned about the quantity recovered after the operation as that can pose a new threat for the forces.
“These detonators are absolutely new and seem to have been recently procured. The packs have the company’s address situated in Maharashtra’s Nagpur area. Initial investigations revealed that the company manufactures and exports explosive initiation systems, accessories, detonators, and has a base of operations in India,” a senior official told News18.
The official also said that these detonators were manufactured almost six years ago by the company but are in pack condition. These detonators can be used for blast operations with a half-second delay Shock Tube Detonator.
They can be used with a delay time in the range of 0-2000ms, 0-5.5, and 0-9 seconds. “These types of Shock tube detonators are non-electric explosives, which can be attached with the desired length of wire along with high-grade explosive. On initiation at one end, the explosive in the shock tube produces a shock wave which travels the length of the tube. These Shock tube detonators are less sensitive to static electricity and radio frequency energy.”
