A local court on Wednesday directed five sons of an old woman to pay her monthly allowance under the Madhya Pradesh Senior Citizen Sustenance and Welfare Act 2007. The order to this effect was given by the court of Sub-Divisional Magistrate, C M Mishra to five sons of Rashida Bi who had filed a complaint under the Act.
The five brothers told the court that they wanted to keep Rashida Bi with them but she refused, saying she wanted to stay in her own house. To this, her sons offered her to pay sustenance allowance as per their financial condition, they said. While Salim, Kallu and Wasim offered to pay Rs 500 each per month to their mother, the remaining two Ismail and Wahid agreed to pay Rs 300 each, the sources said.
When Rashida Bi agreed to their offer, the SDM court directed them to pay the amount every month between the dates 15th and 20th and also take a receipt from her, they said. The SDM also asked the old woman to inform the court in case any of her son failed to pay her on time and warned them (sons) that if the don't pay her on time then they would attract a jail-term as well as fine under the Act, the sources added.
